THE RIDDLE OF BAKULI

‘The Riddle of Bakuli’ expresses a personal journey in which artist Said Adrus shares his South Asian narrative within an East African context.

Said revisits the district of Bakuli in Kampala, Uganda, after an absence of nearly 50 years. He retraces his past including the house he grew up in and the school he attended.

The piece draws upon artwork created during Said’s research, for which the artist visited Kampala, Uganda, the city where he was born but from which he was forced to leave because of the country’s political situation. He was displaced to Switzerland in the 1970s, before arriving in the UK. The film represents a flashpoint for an interlaced relationship between postcolonial historical work and contemporary digital aesthetics.

Said's 'retracings' are part of a larger artistic project - a montage of film, stills and sound inside an expansive installation.
