THE LIGHT GARDEN

(2010)

INTERACTIVE DANCE AND VIDEO INSTALLATION FOR UNDER 5’S AND THEIR CARERS

A flight-footed fire-fly guide encourages toddlers to journey around the scene, playing with the spectrum of movements in the natural world from the tiny world of insects to the giant world of weather…

Each child has a torch to shine in the dark, giving them confidence to go and explore on their own terms. They can follow the dancing ladybug (she introduces imaginative movements all around the space), or they can just shelter inside a tent watching a film of feet in mud, or sit on a cushion bank catching animated ladybirds, or ‘draw’ with their torch on the inside walls of a glowing cave.

They can even control the weather - creating a storm, or alleviating it; by switching big glowing switches, and by getting ‘in the way’ of a beam of light they inadvertently create huge silhouettes in the moon through which we can see a dancing mother and child.

A piece for very young children presenting a magical world to explore and experience freedom, autonomy and agency within it. The scene is also appreciated by parents as they sit back and watch the children complete it.

“The whole twenty minutes was wonderful. It was completely refreshing to have children of such a young age being able to explore and allowed to be children – not having to try and restrain them in their seats” — Deborah Smith, Chopsy Baby

“My daughters adored the Light Garden - it was by far the best video art installation I've ever seen in my life & they were completely enthralled by it. The younger one said at the end 'I didn't want it to finish” —Carolyn, The Place
