GOLD

(2005)

WINNER OF IMZ DANCE SCREEN GRAND PRIX 2005 AND WINNER OF PORTOBELLO FILM FESTIVAL AUDIENCE AWARD 2006

Two young Olympic gymnasts dance in their local gym. Set in an everyday London suburb, Gold creates a surreal and sensual world, a celebration of risk and physicality - evoking the promise of freedom and power of adrenaline of a girl’s early teenage years.

“[Gold is] a beautifully made film and mixes elements of movement created for the camera with a documentary approach to capture a moment in the lives of its subjects.” — IMZ 2005 jury

“More ‘real’ than live dancing…. the slam of shots and edits have the kinesthetic impact of what back flips really feel like, not just what they look like on a distant stage. This film uses devices of cinema with breathtaking ease. The brilliant editor and cinematographer formed a partnership with the bodies in motion that made one forget that cinema-dance might be a hybrid. They collaborated with time, finessed the overlapping rhythms of falling and flying, and made space contain stillness and struggle in the one frame.” — Karen Pearlman, ReelDance Festival Sydney

“Rachel Davies' Gold succeeds on numerous levels. The graceful motions of its dancers impress on their own, but it's the manner in which the cinematography both contrasts and compliments these movements that truly makes the film work…The film's kinetic aesthetic is simply infectious.” — Philip Bajorat, Programmer, 40th Chicago International Film Festival
